A little about us..
Our firm sweeps chimneys in the traditional method using two men, one on the roof to sweep the chimney and one inside to make sure the soot is contained and then removed safely and cleanly.
From the very outset when the van draws up at the premises, we are looking for the safest and easiest way to the roof, watching for overhead power cables, phone lines, satellite dishes, and once you get to the roof we make a visual inspection of the stack to check if it is safe to approach in the first place.
The man on the inside job checks the appliance and considers likely weak area’s where soot may leak from and addresses these area’s prior to sweeping, once the sweeping has been carried out the man on the roof removes his ladders and reports any repairs or dangerous conditions that need to be attended to on the stack, likewise the inside man removes the soot and reports any faults on the appliance. Should we find an appliance or chimney to dangerous to be used we report this in the first instance to the tenant or house owner and follow the report up in writing.
Standard equipment consists of Class 1 & Class 2 ladders depending on the height of the chimney, polycarbonate rods and wooden or plastic centre brushes of various sizes depending on the flue size. Dust sheets, fireplace sealing box and vacuum. Rods are used now instead of the weighted rope because they cause little or no damage to chimneys that are fitted with lining systems.
We carry out many duties on chimneys including sealed smoke tests checking for leakage and poor up-draught, testing chimneys are safe to use for gas and giving sound recommendations on the type of liners and cowls that may have to be used should a chimney be found faulty or dangerous. Video scans are an option sometimes employed to survey chimneys, this very helpful tool can save a lot of time.
The Code of Practice we work to complies with B.S. 6461part 1 & City & Guilds 7641. This ensures that a consistent level of quality and workmanship are maintained at all times. We are also members of the Guild of Master sweeps and are regularly updated on new systems and methods, tried and tested equipment and the latest legislation.
We are registered lining installers for Anki & Isokern chimney systems, some of the largest firms in Europe and we adopt all the standard practices from these firms. A full guarantee certificate is issued with every lining installation and each installation is video recorded giving a visual record of exactly what’s been done and where. All chimneys lined are plated as per document F regulations, Document J England & Wales.
The company and it's employees are are also Hetas and NACE registered.
We can deal with most types of chimneys, lined or unlined, Solid fuel, gas and oil fired. We carry full Public & Employers liability insurance at all times.
Risk assessments are similar to the previous page wherein we are looking for hazards such as power cables, obstructions, ease of access, busy roads and passing public etc. All of these points present a possible hazard. Safety clothing and hard hats, gloves and masks are all standard and are carried in all vehicles at all times. A fairly comprehensive first aid kit is also carried in each vehicle. Method of working is as previously described taking into consideration that the normal time at any location to sweep a chimney is approximately 25 minutes.
